Paul Merson: Arsenal Were Fortunate to Finish Ahead of Tottenham This Season

Published on: 22 May 2016

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes the Gunners were fortunate to finish ahead of Tottenham after a disappointing Premier League campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino's Spurs seemed to have second-place wrapped up with a few weeks left of the season, only to spectacularly collapse in a final day 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United, allowing Arsenal to pip them to a runners-up spot.

Arsenal still finished 12 points behind Premier League champions Leicester City but retained bragging rights in finishing above Spurs for the 21st season in a row.

Speaking to Fantasy FC podcast, Merson admitted that Tottenham didn't deserve to finish the season looking up at their city rivals: "They didn't deserve to do that. It just covers over the cracks."?

Earlier in the week, Christian Eriksen shared a picture on his Instagram account after a disappointing finale to what had been an exhilarating season for Spurs: "Not the finish we wanted! But it has still been a great season! And the support has been amazing! So thank u all for that! #coys #ce23," he wrote.
