A statement on the website reads:

"Atlético de Madrid and Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Nicolás Gaitán to our club. The midfielder is currently playing the Copa América with Argentina, and will travel to Madrid after the tournament that is being held in the United States, to finish all the necessary formalities so he can join the red and white team."

This represents Atleti's first signing of the summer - although it is understood that they already have a deal in place for Portuguese midfielder Diogo Jota - and they should be feeling pretty pleased with themselves, having sought the player's services for quite some time.

Diego Simeone is a huge admirer of his countryman, whom he faced in the group stage of the Champions League when his Rojiblancos lost to Benfica during the season.

The Madrid-based club will part with €25m to secure this signing from a club which has become famous for selling top talent such as David Luiz, Nemanja Matic, Ramires, and most recently Renato Sanches.
