"?Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to completing a deal that would see Benfica winger Nico Gaitain move to the Vicente Calderon this summer as Diego Simeone looks to strengthen his squad ahead of another La Liga title charge in 2016/17.
It is suggested by A Bola in Portugal, a transfer had already been agreed 'in principle', with Gaitain having recently bade farewell to Benfica fans after the victorious final of the Taça da Liga against Maritimo on Friday night.
The 28-year-old Argentinean, who has been linked with Manchester United at nearly every opportunity for the past three or four years, is thought to be joining Atleti on a four-year contract for a free of €25m.
"This was a fantastic way to finish. We won the title last year and we did it again this year," an emotional Gaitain told Portuguese television after the final.
"I've been here for a long time and this is a very emotional time. I don't know if this is the end or not, but the time is coming. I've had great people around me for the many year I've spent at this club.
"I have been treated wonderfully ever since my arrival. I don't want to say that this is it, but the time is approaching [to leave]."
Gaitain scored Benfica's fourth goal in the 6-2 win and leaves the club after more than 250 total appearances in all competitions and the best scoring campaign of his career to date.
