Napoli President Implies Club Won't Accept Less Than €94m Release Clause for Gonzalo Higuain

"?Any club interested in signing prolific Napoli front-man Gonzalo Higuain this summer will have to meet the full value of the Argentine's monster €94m release clause to have any chance of prising him away from Stadio San Paolo.

At least, that is the implication after Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis' latest comments on Higuain's future. He also appears confident that Higuain won't leave even if that fee was met.

"So far I have not received offers for Higuain that match the clause, €94m," De Laurentiis informed the Italian media over the weekend.

"And, assuming a club exists that would offer that money, he knows perfectly well that he could earn more elsewhere, but not have the same spotlight.

"Gonzalo is a good man and Napoli will become for him what it was for Maradona. He is young and has a family that believes in healthy values. I have already put the money on the table to improve his contract, which is what he deserves.

"I have the feeling Pipita (Higuain) will not betray us."

Higuain has been linked with several clubs over the last 12 months, notably Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. Liverpool are the side that has been most heavily linked with a move in the last few weeks, with all other suitors appearing to have dropped any remaining interest.

Jurgen Klopp even recently went to the United States to watch Higuain's Argentina face Chile in the Copa America, although it quickly became apparent that his presence there was little more than a coincidence and nothing to do with transfer scouting.

It has also even been reported that Liverpool, like others, have no interest in pursuing Higuain. If they hypothetically were to, however, paying €94m - the equivalent of more than £74m - would completely smash the club's existing transfer record of £35m, paid for Andy Carroll in 2011.

That alone should be enough to tell you, Higuain won't be joining the Reds any time soon.
