Mike Phelan Credits Hull City Team Despite Injury Time Defeat to Man Utd

"?Hull City caretaker Mike Phelan praised the performance of his players despite the fact they were beaten by Manchester United in injury time on Saturday evening.

Marcus Rashford's last gasp goal secured a 1-0 win for the visitors, who condemned the Tigers to their first defeat of the season. United were on top for the majority of the game but Hull defended resolutely for almost the entire game, until the breakthrough came.

Phelan said in the aftermath of the game, according to the "?Hull Daily Mail: "It's a football match and you have to play right to the death, and we just probably lacked that little bit of concentration. Maybe fatigue came in to it. But credit to my players.

"They performed heroically, I thought.

"It was always going to be difficult. It was never going to be an easy one and it wasn't going to be a game where we'd be able to create many chances. It's disappointing for them and I feel for them because effort is something you demand and ask for and there was no shortage of that from that group of players today.

"I've been in the game long enough to know that there are some teams you can take on and some that you've got to be careful with.

"This Man United team is on a bit of a roll and they are strong, and really strong in the depth that they've got. But you've got to be committed to what you do yourself and you've got to have some kind of identity.

"I thought the Hull City players today performed magnificently in all departments. I thought first half we tried to get at them a bit, we created a few chances, we had a few openings and we kept possession of the ball pretty well. It was just the case that we ran out of steam."

Speaking on his own future, he added: "We have to sit down some time or other. And now with no game coming up for two weeks, I think it's vitally important that some decisions are made. I don't think they (the prospective new owners) will shy away from that but at this present moment in time it depends on who you're talking to.

"You've just got to get on with your job and wait for that moment when they ask to speak. We need to get those issues out of the way, get some players in here first and then obviously my future will probably be decided after."
