Michael Owen Backs Marcus Rashford to Shine at Euro 2016 Because He Doesn't Know Failure

"?Former England striker Michael Owen has backed 18-year-old Marcus Rashford to shine at Euro 2016 because the Manchester United youngster has yet to experience failure in his football career, drawing on experience from his own explosion onto the scene back in the late 1990s.

Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Owen suggested that Rashford won't be handling things any differently than he's ever done and backed the youngster's naivety and exuberance, and 'one in a million' mentality to keep the pressure from getting to him.

"He won't be really excited or pinching himself. It is just the norm for him. I know it isn't to everyone else but he has always scored goals. He has always been one of the star men and taken each step up in his stride," the ex-United and Liverpool forward said.

"He was always exceptional. I got into the England Under-15s and broke all the records, scored goals all the time. It is no different when you go into the seniors - that's the naivety of being young."

Referring to Rashford's emergence and impact at club level, Owen added, "England are not asking him to do something now which is another 10 ratchets up in terms of pressure. He has been doing it already.

"It is hard to explain to people who have never experienced it but that is his life "? it is what he is born to do."

Scoring the winner in the Manchester derby is certainly evidence of that.

Having marked his professional debut in the Europa League in February with two goals, followed by another two goals in his Premier League a few days later, Rashford also scored just two minutes into his England debut last month.

"It is a one-in-a-million type of mentality at that age that gets you there," Owen said.

Kicking it back to his own experience of rising though the Liverpool ranks and taking the 1998 World Cup by storm, he commented, "That's how I felt. I have never failed - I have always been the best player in my team. I always answered every question and got into the next team up at club level and then the international set-up.

"It is not hard if you are very good at doing something. It comes easy to you so there is no need to be nervous. That is what Rashford has.

"Any challenge that anyone has thrown at him so far, he has succeeded. Why should the next one be any different? If you don't think like that, you won't make it at the highest level so young. There are only a few people who can do it at an early age."
