Marcus Rashford: Playing for England Is Amazing and Still Doesn't Feel Real

Published on: 08 June 2016

"?Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is still waking up pinching himself every morning as he prepares for England's opening game at Euro 2016 this weekend, revealing that being involved with his country still doesn't feel quite real.

Speaking to FATV from England's training facilities, Rashford explained that back in December he was still trying to just earn a place in United's Under-21 team. He was then thrust into the first-team in February but even then he never thought about an international place.

"To be honest, I wasn't really thinking about the England setup, because obviously at United there were a lot of games coming thick and fast so my focus was on them," the teenager explained.

"At the end of the season you talk and stuff, but to be here (with England) now is just amazing."

Rashford was first included in Roy Hodgson's 26-man provisional squad and marked his debut against Australia with a goal after just two minutes. He then made the final cut for the Euros a few days later and the whole situation has just been surreal.

"When I first went into the changing room and you see all the players' names on the shirts, it doesn't seem real," he explained.

"I remember going home after and my brother agreed with me, he didn't think it was real either. But, until you get used to it, that's what it's going to be like."

For England captain Wayne Rooney, who was sitting alongside his young club colleague, it's important that Rashford keeps playing with the same freedom and exuberance that have characterised his performances over the last few months.

"The most important thing is for you to enjoy it because there's not that pressure on you that might be on the older lads who've consistently got to perform - you've got that freedom to go and play and have no fear really," the 30-year-old said, drawing in his own past experience.

"I always think with young lads. it's better not to fill them with advice, 'You should do this, you should do that'. Just let them go and play because that's what has got them into this position."
