Marcelo Lippi Calls on Serie A Decision-Makers to Introduce Limits on Foreign Players

Published on: 29 May 2016

"?Former Italy World Cup-winning coach Marcelo Lippi has called on Serie A to introduce restrictions on the number of foreigners plying their trade in Italy's top division.

Lippi, who lifted the famous trophy in 2006 after defeating France on penalties, claims that for the national side to once again achieve the same high level of success, clubs need to trust in Italian talent to kickstart the national team.

Speaking to Radio Uno, via Gazzetta World., the 68-year-old said: "All that needs to be done is for all the club presidents to agree to only have a maximum of five foreigners per team, with the other six being all Italian.

"I know it is a fantasy, but it is the only thing possible. Everyone says that there are too many foreigners.

"We need a pact of honour."?

Serie A has been criticised in recent years for its lack of competitiveness, with several of its big name stars often moving overseas to La Liga, the Bundesliga and the Premier League.

Recently though, Serie A has seen a huge influx of top talent, with Juventus reaching the 2015 Champions League final thanks to Paul Pogba, Alvaro Morata et al, and Gonzalo Higuain spearheading Napoli's attack and leading the Serie A goalscoring charts. Roma's Radja Nainggolan has also been linked with a move to Chelsea.

And Lippi has been impressed with Juventus' recent exploits and calls the high profile interest in midfielder Paul Pogba a sign of how big a club the Old Lady are.

"Even if the club sits down to negotiate the €80m sale of Pogba, it is a sign that his suitors are very much aware of the level they have reached,"? he said.

"Seeing the Champions League final the other evening, I felt sorry for Juventus, as they easily could have been there. Their future prospects are good, this squad has made continual and constant progress.

"A sign of this is the fact that they are not willing to sit down and negotiate the sale of their important players.

"They feel that they have reached the size of being one of the four biggest teams in Europe and so are able to keep their players."?
