Manchester United Legend Says Only Four Players Safe Under Mourinho as Giggs Nears Exit

Published on: 01 June 2016

"?Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has claimed that only four players at the club are safe from Jose Mourinho's axe, with widespread changes expected at Old Trafford this summer.

Juan Mata and Daley Blind are two stars who have already been linked with exits after being first-team regulars under Louis van Gaal, as Mourinho is expected to spend anything up to £200m on a full squad revamp in the upcoming transfer window as he looks to restore the club to its former glories.

Speaking to "?888sport, Yorke hinted that he expected Mata to leave, but said that the Spaniard wouldn't be the only one feeling nervous about his place in Mourinho's plans. "Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon," he said. "But it's just rumours in the media. We obviously know about (Juan) Mata and Jose and that hasn't changed.

"There will be a few players under the microscope who aren't Manchester United players who somehow got in there. They've underperformed and no-one is safe apart from De Gea, Martial, Rashford and Rooney. Everyone in between will be looking over their shoulders."

Ryan Giggs is expected to leave the club this summer after "?reportedly rejecting the offer of a new role this week, with Yorke lamenting the fact that his former teammate wasn't given a chance to prove himself. He said: "When I look at the whole package out there my overall choice was Giggsy.

"(Zinedine) Zidane, (Jose) Enrique, Pep (Guardiola) and (Diego) Simeone and all those guys were given an opportunity at a big club and I thought there was a change of mentality with appointing managers due to players now being tuned in to what it takes.

"Giggs spent three years under two managers at Manchester United and at 42 it was a good time to hand it to him. The club decided against it and then when you look what is out there, Mourinho was the best option after Giggsy."
