Manchester United Keeper Sergio Romero Confident He Can Overtake David De Gea Under Mourinho

Published on: 05 June 2016

"?Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero believes he can dethrone David De Gea and establish himself as the club's number one under Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine, who joined United last summer on a free transfer, started the season in between the sticks as De Gea was linked with a move to Real Madrid, while Victor Valdes was shunned from the first team.

De Gea eventually overtook Romero to reclaim his starting spot and, all told, the 29-year-old played a mere four games after the month of August.

Romero, however, is confident that he can start a new chapter in his Man United career under new manager Jose Mourinho.

"Mourinho knows I'm a hard worker and he can count on me," the former Sampdoria keeper said, according to the Daily Mail

"I think the door to becoming United's first goalkeeper is open again for me."

De Gea, who won Man United's player of the season for the third time running, is once again linked with a move to Real Madrid although his comments concerning Mourinho's arrival indicate a willingness to stay.

"To speak of Jose Mourinho is to talk about a winning coach and that is United's philosophy and mine," he said.

"With that idea in mind, I'm certain we can build a great team. I welcome him."
