Manchester United Appoint Jose Mourinho as New Manager

"?Manchester United have appointed Jose Mourinho as their new manager, with the Portuguese taking over from Louis van Gaal after the Dutchman was sacked on Monday following months of speculation.

The club announced the deal in a statement on their official website, confirming that Mourinho had signed a three-year deal with an option for a fourth.

In the statement, Mourinho said: "To become Manchester United manager is a special honour in the game. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. There is a mystique and a romance about it which no other club can match.

"I have always felt an affinity with Old Trafford; it has hosted some important memories for me in my career and I have always enjoyed a rapport with the United fans. I'm looking forward to being their manager and enjoying their magnificent support in the coming years."

The saga at Old Trafford had dragged on for months before Van Gaal was officially relieved of his duties just two days after winning the FA Cup with his side at Wembley, the famous cup not enough to keep him in a job after missing out on Champions League football.

The Dutchman took his side to the top of the Premier League by the start of October, but a rash of injuries led to a dip in form from which their title challenge never recovered - a defeat against West Ham in their penultimate game of the season leaving Champions League qualification out of the team's hands.

The arrival of the former Chelsea boss at Old Trafford has fanned the flames of the rumour that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is on his way to Manchester to play for his first Premier League club, after announcing in recent weeks that he would be leaving Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
