Mamadou Sakho to Be Cleared of Doping and Receive No Further Punishment Despite Initial Ban

"?Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is set to receive no further punishment for failing a drugs test in March, according to "?L'Equipe.

Sakho was tested following Liverpool's Europa League match with Manchester United on March 17, and the results showed that the Frenchman had taken a fat-burner which was said to be on UEFA's list of banned substances. However, the reports now claim that the substance is in fact not on the banned list, leaving Sakho free to return to action.

In the wake of the revelations, Liverpool moved to suspend the player from representing them, while he was given a temporary ban from football while the matter was investigated. That ban expired on Saturday, and it was thought that Sakho would receive a lengthy ban from six months to two years.

However, Sakho is expected to be cleared officially in the coming days, meaning if called upon, he may even be able to represent France at Euro 2016. It had initially been suggested he could be drafted into Les Bleus' squad for the tournament following Jeremy Mathieu's injury, though Lyon's Samuel Umtiti has been brought in instead today.

Once the ban is cleared, Sakho will be free to return to action. Whether he does appear for France remains to be seen, though it does come as great news for Liverpool - who will be able to have Sakho available for the start of the new season.
