Liverpool Stars Apologise on Social Media for Conceding Penalties During Sunderland Draw

Liverpool pair Ragnar Klavan and Sadio Mane have both offered their apologies to fans after each player gave away a penalty during Monday afternoon's 2-2 draw with Sunderland that cost the Reds two valuable points in the context of the Premier League title race.

Liverpool had taken an early lead at the Stadium of Light when Daniel Sturridge scored inside the first 20 minutes, only for Klavan to trip Black Cats midfielder Didier Ndong in the penalty area a few moments later.

That allowed Jermain Defoe to equalise from the spot, with the Estonian owning up to his mistake with a message to his Instagram followers after the game.

"Not a good performance today, was not on my toes with the first penalty situation. But need to shake it off and keep on moving forward," he wrote.

Still, with no Philippe Coutinho back on the pitch, it was Mane who eventually restored Liverpool's lead as the game crept into the final 20 minutes - but it was also the Senegalese winger that was guilty of the handball that presented Sunderland with their second spot-kick.

Defoe once again obliged, successfully beating Simon Mignolet from 12 yards.

"Not the best game today for the team I'm sorry for the handball and see you all soon," Mane tweeted late on Monday night.

The result saw Liverpool close the gap on Chelsea at the top of the table to five points, but the Premier League leaders have a game in hand to play against Tottenham where there is potential to increase their advantage to eight points.

"It was really difficult [to take] because it's not what we expected," Mane explained to Liverpoolfc.com after the game.

"We were winning and I think we played well and created a lot of chances but we had to score. We didn't score and it was a little bit of a problem. We have to accept it and prepare for the next games."
