Liverpool Defender Joe Gomez Set to Make Long Awaited Comeback in Pre-Season

Published on: 16 June 2016

"?Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is set to make his long awaited comeback during pre-season after spending the last eight months nursing a cruciate knee ligament injury, the result of a long and carefully planned rehabilitation period.

Gomez hasn't played since October when he was struck down while representing England at Under-21 level, and according to the Liverpool Echo, the teenager has continued to work hard at the training ground while the rest of the squad are at Euro 2016 or on holiday.

It is said that Liverpool staff have put a specially designed plan in place for Gomez after he only recently returned to training outdoors.

As such, he will be re-integrated slowly when pre-season begins next month and will continue to do his own fitness sessions as well joining in with the rest of the squad on occasion.

The end result is that Gomez will play at least some part in a few of the eight various friendlies that Liverpool have lined up over the course of July and August before the new Premier League campaign kicks off.

He will be part of the squad that travels to the United States for the annual summer tour, although there is not a particular timeframe or number of games that the coaching and medical staff have in mind. There is certainly no desire to rush the youngster.

Gomez was a surprise starter for Brendan Rodgers at left-back at the beginning of last season and was even keeping Alberto Moreno out of the team. Given some of the Spaniard's performances in the months since, fans would be forgiven for wanting the former Charlton prodigy back as soon as possible.
