Liverpool Boosted as £72m-Rated Transfer Target Not Deterred by Lack of European Football

"?Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain is said to be interested in a move to Liverpool this summer, despite the Reds having failed to qualify for any European competitions in a season dominated by ultimately futile cup runs.

Higuain hit a monstrous 36 goals in 35 Serie A games this season to become one of the hottest names on the continent, but the "?Mirror claim that the Argentine is looking to leave the Serie A club this summer to head to pastures new.

Liverpool are expected to fully revamp their forward line this summer, with £32.5m man Christian Benteke's future looking decidedly uncertain while Daniel Sturridge remains some way short of the unquestioned leading role he desires.

Higuain is in high demand this summer, with a reported release clause in the region of £72m in his contract. Paris Saint-Germain are said to be interested, seeing him as a potential replacement for the departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer, with Edinson Cavani too prone to wasting the majority of goalscoring chances presented to him.

Chelsea are another club without European football who are chasing the 28-year-old, with recent reports that they are particularly keen to bring Higuain to England in order to boost their forward line and assure that nothing like this season's ninth placed finish in the Premier League happens under Antonio Conte's management.

Manchester United are also said to be keen on Higuain, who is almost as famous for his lack of bottle in key matches as he is for his general goalscoring prowess, but free agent Ibrahimovic may be their primary target after the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager last week.
