Jermaine Defoe has signed a new contract at Sunderland, penning a deal which will keep him at the club until 2019.

The striker scored 15 Premier League goals (18 in all comps) for the Black Cats during the season, helping them keep their status in the top flight for yet another campaign after it looked like they were headed for relegation.

He has extended his current deal by an extra year, and Sunderland will be all the better for it.

"Jermain is one of the greatest goal-scorers in the history of the Premier League and is a player that every manager would want to have in their team," Sam Allardyce told "?Sunderland's Official Website.

Defoe joined Sunderland last January from Toronto FC, in a deal which saw Jozy

Alidore go the other way. He has scored 22 goals in 53 appearances since joining the club, and finished this season as the third-highest English scorer in the League, behind Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.

"He proved that beyond doubt last season by scoring 15 league goals, he is in fantastic physical condition and we are very pleased that we have been able to extend his stay with us,"? Sunderland coach Sam Allardyce said of the 33-year-old.
