Jens Lehmann Claims Joe Hart Was Scared of Gareth Bale After Free-Kick Howler

Published on: 16 June 2016

"?Former Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann believes Joe Hart was scared of Gareth Bale - and that is why the 29 year-old conceded the free-kick which nearly denied England all three points against Wales in Lens on Thursday.

Hart has come under some heavy criticism after conceding from a Bale free-kick, which was 35 yards out. The Manchester City man got a hand to it, but that wasn't enough to keep the ball from going into the back of the net.

And speaking to "?BBC Radio 5 Live, Lehmann described Hart as scared and nervous.

"I think that Joe was a little bit nervous in that situation and probably the whole game because always being told "?we are favourites, we have to win, it's just Wales and they are the underdogs.

"All of a sudden Gareth Bale came up for the free kick and he didn't need to put up a three-man wall first of all because it would have given him a better sight to defend that ball without a wall.

"And then he's used the wrong technique on top of that because I think he hasn't used his palm, he's used his fists. From that distance, you never put up a wall in training- but in an important game he does. It tells you something about his mental state. He was a bit scared."

England went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from second half substitutes Jamie Vardy and a 91st minute winner from Daniel Sturridge. After the match, Hart spoke to reporters in the mixed zone and, according to the Daily Mirror, said: "Why do you want to talk to me? I'm the villain. Talk to the heroes."

England now top Group B on four points while Wales are just behind on three points. The Three Lions take on Slovakia next Monday and should they go on to win, they will top the group. Whereas Chris Coleman's side take on Russia on the same day, knowing that a win for them will secure qualification to the Round of 16.
