Javier Hernandez: Man United and Real Madrid Should Have Started Me More

Published on: 31 May 2016

"?Bayer Leverkusen's Javier Hernandez has told "?FourFourTwo magazine that Manchester United and Real Madrid should have handed him more starts during his time at both clubs.

The striker joined United from Mexican outfit Guadalajara for around £5.5m in July 2010.

However Hernandez, also known as 'Chicarito', featured on 54 occasions from the bench at Old Trafford, compared to just 49 starts during a five-year spell with the Red Devils.

The 28-year-old then joined Madrid on a season-long loan in September 2014 but, again, found opportunities more forthcoming from the bench - 16 of his 23 La Liga outings coming as a substitute.

Hernandez joined Bundesliga side Leverkusen in the summer of 2015, with 25 of his 28 league appearances coming from the start.

And the Mexico international said that, had United and Madrid had more faith in him, he would be viewed as a better player by fans of both outfits.

"We all know the history of United and Real "? European Cups, fighting for everything "? but now I'm with the third-best team in the Bundesliga,"? he says.

"If I'd had more chances at United or Real, I'd probably have been "?the star' there as well "? we'll never know. I didn't have the chance.

"I never had the chance to play 20 games in a row so people could say: "?He's a good player who should stay' or "?He can't be the star "? he's not a good player'.

"Ask the United fans. The numbers are there. I started only 85 games at United and I scored 60 goals [in total]. At Real, I started just 12 games and scored nine goals. At Leverkusen I've started 37 games and I have 26 goals.

"The difference is that Leverkusen want me on the pitch. The others didn't."?

Hernandez will likely add to his 80 caps for Mexico at this summer's Copa America tournament in the USA.
