Jamie Redknapp says Eric Dier has the authority to one day be the England captain. Dier struck England's opening goal during their Euro 2016 1-1 draw with Russia with a glorious free-kick and impressed throughout the game.
The 22-year-old Tottenham Hotspur midfielder attracted much praise for his performance, which emulated his impressive form both for club and country during last season.
Redknapp told Sky Sports News: "One of the real positives was Eric Dier - I thought he was fantastic and looks like he's getting better and better. If he carries on improving, then he's got that England captaincy look about him. He looks like a captain.
"He's got so much authority in the way that he plays and is super bright. Every good thing England did seemed to revolve around him. I was very impressed."
Many onlookers and observers are starting to believe that Dier is essential to Roy Hodgson's squad, being the only natural holding midfielder and also possessing the ability to naturally fill in at centre-half. He has certainly already proven that he has the temperament and talent to thrive in the England team, despite his tender years and this being his first tournament.
If he continues on a similar trajectory, Redknapp's words could prove prophetic in years to come.
