Jack Wilshere Near the Top of Pep Guardiola's Manchester City Summer Wish-List

Published on: 03 June 2016

"?Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is reportedly a shock summer target for Manchester City as new manager Pep Guardiola looks to complete a mass overhaul of the squad he inherited from Manuel Pellegrini in an attempt to challenge for silverware next season.

City have already sealed the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund, and the Sun newspaper has claimed that Wilshere is near the top of the list to be next.

The 24-year-old, who will be with England in France at Euro 2016 despite missing nearly all of the domestic season with injury, has regularly been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium before.

No one is certainly questioning his ability, but fitness would be a concern given his history.

It is thought that Guardiola is keen to have more English players in the squad - that often seemed the motivation behind trying to sign Wilshere in the past - with only Joe Hart, Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph left in the first-team following Richard Wright's summer exit.

City have struggled to meet Premier League and UEFA quotas regarding home-grown players in the past, with cynics suggesting that signing the like Delph or Scott Sinclair were born out of the need to meet the rules rather than what those individuals could bring in a footballing sense.

Guardiola's overhaul is likely to continue right the way through the summer as he assesses his needs. Previous reports have suggested he has informed his new employers that £200m will have to be spent as he needs players in virtually every position to make the team competitive.

There were suggestions that Vincent Kompany's days could be numbered because of his poor fitness record. But, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Belgian has been assured of his place next season.

Aymeric Laporte and John Stones remain key targets, but Kompany still has a role to play.
