Italian Giants Enter Race for Highly-Rated Atletico Madrid Defender Diego Godin

"?Juventus and AC Milan look set to battle it out for Atletico Madrid's reliable central defender Diego Godin, according to "?reports in Italy.


The 30-year-old has already been linked with a move to Milan over the summer, but a bid was delayed due to their ongoing takeover by a Chinese consortium.

But now, "?Tuttosport claim that Serie A champions Juventus are planning a large bid for the defender next summer.


This could tie in with "?speculation linking Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci with a move away from Turin, as Chelsea are reportedly keen.


The Old Lady are also seeking a replacement for veteran defender Andrea Barzagli, who will turn 36 in May.


But both sides will face fierce competition for Godin, with a number of top European clubs potentially interested in the Uruguay international.

Godin turns 31 in February and is contracted at Atletico until 2019, but with boss Diego Simeone reducing his own contract to 2018, a move away from the Spanish capital is definitely on the cards.


However, a potential switch will depend on how well Atletico do in La Liga this season, as the Colchoneros are currently sat top of the table with seven games played.

Upon returning from the international break, Atletico will face off against the struggling Granada, before travelling to high-flying Sevilla the following weekend.


Godin has played 258 times for Atletico over six seasons, scoring an impressive 19 goals from defence.


He is also a stalwart for his country, earning 103 caps for Uruguay in an illustrious 11-year international career.
