Ian Wright: Ross Barkley Could Miss Out on Euro 2016 Spot

Published on: 27 May 2016

"?Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright has told ITV Sport that Everton midfielder "?Ross Barkley could be cut from England's 23-man squad for the European Championships this summer.

Wright was speaking in the aftermath of England 2-1 victory last night over Australia at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.

The TV pundit believes that the toffees midfielder has slipped under the radar in Roy Hodgson's squad, and could be left out if the England manager opts for other options in the summer.

"Somebody who has slipped under the radar is Ross Barkley,"? Wright said.

"If they [England] are thinking of freeing up another space, then you have to look at Ross and think about how things are going for him."?

The 22-year-old endured a mixed campaign at Goodison Park last season, starting in impressive form before falling away towards the end of the season. The midfielder scored 14 goals in all competitions last term.

England manager Hodgson must reduce his provisional 26-man squad by three players before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday and Barkley, who has not started England's last two friendlies against Turkey and Australia, could miss out on the Championships in France.

The Everton midfielder's chances improved after reports that Fabian Delph looks set to miss out due to a calf injury, which would leave a gap in midfield that Barkley could fill, however if Hodgson opts to select both Daniel Sturridge and Marcus Rashford in his final 23, it would be no surprise if Barkley was left out to make room.

Barkley has 21 caps for the senior England squad, scoring two goals.
