Germany Legend Lothar Matthaus Claims 'Difference-Maker' Aubameyang Is Worth €45m More Than Pogba

Published on: 23 December 2016

"?Germany legend Lothar Matthaus is one of very few men to have played in three World Cup finals.

The former midfield dynamo also won seven Bundesliga titles and a Scudetto during his illustrious career. So, you'd assume he knows a good player when he sees one. And when Matthaus describes a player as being worth €150m you'd better pay attention.

Unswayed by his loyalties to ex-club Bayern Munich, Matthaus, in conversation with "?Bild, spoke highly of the talents of Borussia Dortmund's star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, calling him one the world's best.

"Aubameyang has become one of the best players in the world and it's no wonder that many clubs are chasing his signature"? he explained.

The speedy Gabon international has more goals than games in the Bundesliga this season, leading the league's scoring charts with 16 strikes in 15 outings, and has become one of the most coveted forwards in world football, with Real Madrid predictably amongst those linked with his signature.

1990 Ballon d'Or Winner Matthaus also compared Aubameyang's successes to that of world record transfer holder Paul Pogba, who he hinted was perhaps a little overpriced.

"If a player like Pogba is worth €105 million, then Aubameyang is worth €150 million. He is a player that makes the difference, unlike Pogba"?.

Despite Aubameyang's goalscoring heroics, Thomas Tuchel's Dortmund side have failed to ignite this season and sit two points shy of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt and 12 behind perennial league-leaders Bayern Munich.

Should they fail to deliver Champions League football, speculation over their star striker's future will intensify faster than the man himself running down the wing.

Suitors are expected to mount, while Real Madrid's reduced transfer embargo will only prevent the la Liga juggernauts from swooping until the summer, when a mega bid close to Matthaus estimations may be impossible for the Dortmund hierarchy to resist.

Aubameyang himself has previously affirmed his desire to join los Blancos one day, and told ZDF: "My grandfather, always wished that I would play in Spain.

Two years ago, when he died, I promised him that someday I will play for Real - and I work hard to reach that goal.

"Real Madrid is my main goal but at the moment I like it in Dortmund. If there is a chance to go to Madrid, I will say immediately yes - but at the moment there is no contact."
