"?England assistant coach Gary Neville believes that Roy Hodgson deserves to stay on as national team boss beyond Euro 2016 this summer because of the "excellent piece of work" that has been done since he took over from Fabio Capello four years ago.
Neville admits that Hodgson will need England to give a good account of themselves in France later this month, but believes the way that the former Fulham, Liverpool and West Brom boss has brought a new generation of players into the team deserves a lot of credit.
"People will judge it based upon tournaments. I think Roy can be proud of an excellent piece of work," the retired defender explained to the Daily Telegraph.
Clarifying that Euro 2016 is how Hodgson and his staff will ultimately be remembered if this proves to be the end, Neville added, "My view would be that he would go on beyond the summer because at this moment in time he's doing the right things and making the right decisions, not just for himself, but for the team long-term."
Six years ago, the squad that went to the World Cup was largely the same one that had been to the two previous tournaments. The group went in with 820 combined caps, nearly 300 more than today's squad, while Fabio Capello even tried to get Paul Scholes out of retirement at the 11th hour.
"I think of [the World Cup in] 2010 in South Africa and old players called back out of retirement and panic calls on the last day to players to come and play," Neville went on to say.
"Roy went the other way. He went with (Ross) Barkley, (Raheem) Sterling, (Danny) Welbeck, (Phil) Jones and (Chris) Smalling. (Jon) Flanagan and (John) Stones were brought in pre-tournament [in 2014]. Post-tournament, (Dele) Alli and (Eric) Dier were brought in among others.
"He's made a series of really good decisions for the English team but also for future tournaments for the next two to four years and hopefully he, we, can see that through."
