"He is injured and I am afraid it is a bad injury," Mourinho said via Sky Sports. "It is in his knee, the ligament area. He feels it is really bad."

News from the Daily Mail on Tuesday confirmed that Bailly will be out of action for at least eight weeks, but the player himself remains hopeful, and aims to be fit in less time.

"I wanted to thank you for all the messages of support that I received since the injury!' he wrote on Instagram.

"I hope to be able to play again for United and The Elephants before 2 months, God willing."

Bailly had been one of United's better performers. He has impressed ever since joining for £30m over the summer, and this injury could prove a huge blow.

The expected timeline means that he could miss as many as 12 upcoming games for the club. The Red Devils are set to face Manchester City in an EFL Cup tie on Wednesday, and will also play Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham during those two months.
