FC Schalke 04 Join Manchester United in the Race for Swiss Star Breel Embolo

"?Bundesliga side Schalke have joined Manchester United in the race for Swiss striker Breel Embolo, "?Kicker reports.

The German news outlet has indicated that Schalke are now heavily interested in the 19-year-old, who will be looking to acquire the teenager's signature when he returns from the Euros in France this summer.

The Swiss international was originally a target for Premier league side Manchester United, as well as German club RB Leipzig in recent weeks, having impressed at a young age in the Swiss Super League with current club FC Basel.

Despite a brief involvement in the transfer saga however, Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick has confirmed the club are out of the running for the player: "We've informed the agent of Embolo and Basel that we are no longer interested in the transfer."

Jose Mourinho's United were initially favourites to snap up the former Old Boys player, however, Schalke appear to have joined the mix, after rumours suggest that the German outfit are set to lose two attacking options this summer.

Long-serving striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is set to return home, rejoining Eredivisie giants Ajax after scoring 76 goals in 92 appearances from 2006-2008. The Dutch international has made over 150 appearances for Schalke, but is ready to leave the German club after six years.

20-year-old Leroy Sane has also been rumoured to be leaving Schalke, with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City keen on bringing the German international to the Etihad. Sane only made his professional senior debut in 2014, but has impressed a whole host of top clubs across Europe, scoring 13 goals in 55 appearances.

Embolo has been highlighted as the player to replace these two outgoing stars, with current club Basel valuing the teenager at £20m, as he continues to impress in the Euros, helping Switzerland to a second place finish in Group A behind hosts France.
