Ex-Liverpool Midfielder Alberto Aquilani Regrets 'Hasty' Anfield Exit

"?The Italian's career has hardly prevailed since his departure from Liverpool, and the Premier League club look to be one of the most impressive feats on Alberto Aquilani's Curriculum Vitae.

The Italian midfielder in due to make his debut in Italy this weekend for league minnows Pescara after leaving Sporting Lisbon this summer, the second time he has returned to Italy following a move abroad.

The Italian believes a return to his homeland was of right timing when deciding to leave Portugal, but insists he did not give England a fair chance and regrets his hasty departure, he admitted in an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Aquilani played just one season at Liverpool before returning to Italy on a loan deal to AC Milan, before signing permanently for Fiorentina in 2012, where he stayed for three seasons.

Aquilani said: "I had a great time with Liverpool and I had the honour of wearing a special shirt and playing in an incredible stadium. Then I decided to leave, and perhaps I was a bit hasty.

"Maybe I should have stayed and continued playing in the Premier League, but I wanted to come back to Italy for family reasons. Nobody forced me out."

Aquilani also felt the need to return home this summer too, albeit not for family reasons. Pescara coach and ex-Italian World Cup winner Massimo Oddo contacted Aquilani, who convinced him in no time.

"I went to Portugal with the objective of winning the league -- I was convinced about it," Aquilani said. "We had an amazing year with a new points' record, yet we incredibly still finished second, two points behind Benfica.

"It was one of the best experiences I've had at a top club who are maybe underestimated by the rest of Europe. At the end of the season, though, I got the feeling that I might have less of a chance this season so I asked if I could return to Italy.

"It was Oddo who ignited the spark. He called me and really transmitted to me a great motivation, explaining his views on football which are the same as mine. I took this chance of joining Pescara in a flash."

Aquilani has to date made 239 appearances in the Serie A, which will only increase with his time with Pescara.
