Everton Line Up Former Arsenal Man Marc Overmars to Join New-Look Backroom

"?Everton are lining up an offer to make former Arsenal star Marc Overmars a part of their new-look backroom staff, "?according to The Express

The former Dutch international winger is currently the Director of Football at Ajax, a position he's held since 2012, and the Toffees are said to want him to take up a similar role at Goodison Park.

The club are already on the lookout for a manager after they sacked Roberto Martinez earlier this month, but new majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri is said to be planning a complete overhaul of the coaching structure and wants both a Director of Football and a Technical Director in the new regime.

Overmars spent three years with Arsenal, following a move from Ajax in 1997, and was part of Arsene Wenger's first double-winning side of 1997/98. After scoring 40 goals in 141 appearances at Highbury, he left for Barcelona in 2000.

He couldn't reproduce his form at the Nou Camp however, and a recurrence of a knee injury that blighted the earlier part of his career saw him retire in 2004. Four years later he reversed his decision as he re-signed for his first club Go Ahead Eagles, but after just one season the knee injury convinced him to retire for a second time.

Should Overmars accept the role at Everton, it will add significant weight to the rumours that former Ajax boss Frank de Boer is on his way to fill the vacant managerial position at the club. The two shared a strong working relationship during their time in the Ajax dugout, and were also teammates in their playing careers, not only at Ajax and Barcelona but internationally as well.

De Boer left his post at the Amsterdam Arena at the end of this season having spent five and a half years as manager. He won the Eredivisie four seasons in a row from 2010/11 to 2013/14, but left after watching PSV Eindhoven beat his side to title for the second time.

Since de Boer's departure, he's been strongly linked with Everton, and is rumoured to be Moshiri's preferred candidate. The move for Overmars could well see the path cleared for him to take over in time for next season.
