"?Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier has committed his long-term future to the club with a new five-year contract that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2021.

Dier is the latest in a growing list of Spurs stars that have penned new deals over the last 12 months, following on from the most recent example of Christian Eriksen last week.

The 22-year-old is beginning his third season as a Tottenham player after joining from Sporting CP in the summer of 2014. He started out as a utility defender but has since established himself as the club's premier holding midfield player and as a regular in that role for England.

Dier was brought up in Portugal after moving there with his family as a child. He was schooled by Sporting's elite academy in Lisbon and it was in the Sporting ranks that he began his senior career.

Many believe that his education in a different football culture has served to make Dier a more rounded player now that he has returned to England.

"There are many reasons why I wanted to commit my future to Tottenham," he explained as part of a fan Q&A on Twitter after the news was announced.

"We have a fantastic squad full of young, exciting players. We've got the new stadium on its way and obviously the fantastic facilities at the training ground.

"And then of course we have a fantastic manager (Mauricio Pochettino) who is great for all of us young players. He really looks after us and makes sure we keep improving."
