News of United's interest in Bailly only stirred over the weekend when Spanish sources published details of advanced talks between the Old Trafford club and Villarreal.

It was revealed at the time that the centre-back, who is also capable of playing in either full-back position, had a £31m release clause. It is understood that United have not triggered that clause, but the value of the deal will hit that mark by the time various add-ons have come into play.

Bailly only joined Villarreal from Espanyol in January 2015, bought as a replacement for Arsenal-bound Gabriel Paulista. The Yellow Submarine paid a little over £4m for him and therefore stand to make a huge profit should the sale to United go through.

He made his international debut for Ivory Coast in 2015 and was part of the country's victorious African Cup of Nations squad, playing in all six games en-route to lifting the trophy.
