Daniel Sturridge to Be Overlooked for Start Against Wales as England Prepare to Name Unchanged XI

Published on: 14 June 2016

"?Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is set to be overlooked for a starting place in England's crunch Euro 2016 fixture against Wales on Thursday, as Roy Hodgson intends to name the same eleven that drew with Russia on Saturday.

"Put simply, Sturridge is England's best striker. When he is fit."https://t.co/3I04Ziqr4R

Former Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is likely to retain his place ahead of his former club teammate according to the "?Independent, and it also means that the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne will need to be content with a place on the bench too. Adam Lallana is set to be the only Reds player who plays from the first whistle.

Lallana performed well in the 1-1 draw with Milner making an appearance as a late substitute, but Hodgson appears determined to stick with both Sterling and Harry Kane in attack after being pleased with England's performance.

Wales top the group as it stands and know that a win would ensure they qualify for the next round, but speaking in a press conference on Tuesday, Lallana revealed England need to be wary of fellow Liverpool man Joe Allen and a number of other Welsh players - and not just Gareth Bale.

According to the "?Liverpool Echo, he said: "You don't want to leave your team too vulnerable on the counter-attack with players like Gareth Bale playing. The strengths and qualities that he has.

"But it's not a one-man show. They've got plenty of other good players.

"I have the pleasure of playing with Joe Allen and know what a talent he is. Aaron Ramsey is another one who is very talented, so we can't just put all our focus on Gareth then get a sucker punch from one of their other good players.

"It's right we respect the whole team and look at their strengths and weaknesses and figure out how we are going to beat them."
