Daniel Sturridge Could Miss Euro 2016 After Fresh Injury Concern

Published on: 25 May 2016

"?Another day ending in 'y', another Daniel Sturridge injury. The Liverpool striker is said to have complained of a calf issue this week, and is a major doubt to play in Friday night's friendly against Australia at the Stadium of Light.

With the Reds forward out, the Mail report that Marcus Rashford would be almost certain to start for Roy Hodgson's side, essentially getting an audition for a role in the summer's 23 man squad for the European Championships in France.

Sturridge sat out Wednesday's training session with the injury and, if Rashford looks good at Sunderland's ground on Friday, could find his place in Hodgson's final squad disappearing rapidly into the distance, with one striker in the provisional squad expected to miss out.

That striker was expected to be Rashford, but Sturridge's injury problems resurfacing once again will be a serious concern for Hodgson, who would prefer to have some level of confidence that his backup forwards at the tournaments will at least be available to play when needed.

Sturridge had gone a whole four months without injury - scoring nine goals in 19 games in his longest spell of consecutive games since June 2014 when Liverpool's famous title challenge fell apart so spectacularly, as did the 26-year-old's body.

With Sturridge having played just 58 minutes of international football since September 2014, his place in Hodgson's plans is far from guaranteed - and the England head coach could yet decide that he would prefer to bring the reliable fitness and wildcard excitement of United's Rashford to France this summer rather than risk another injury to Sturridge.
