Christian Benteke Contemplates Anfield Exit If Jurgen Klopp Deems Him Surplus to Requirements

Liverpool striker Christian Benteke has revealed he is considering an Anfield exit if he continues to be a peripheral figure in Jurgen Klopp's plans, Liverpool Echo reports.

The Belgium international has endured a hugely frustrating first season under Klopp and his future at Anfield has been the subject of intense speculation as a result.

Since his £32.5m arrival last summer, the former Aston Villa striker has made just 14 starts with just seven coming since January under Klopp with a meagre return of 9 goals in the Premier League.

The former Dortmund boss also deployed attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino in the centre forward position despite Benteke's availability. He was overlooked again upon Daniel Sturridge's return to fitness while youngster Divock Origi enjoyed a fine run in the side towards the latter stages of the season.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away, with reports in January stating he rejected a big money move to China, while West Ham remain interested in his services.

But despite his woes at Merseyside this season, he is part of Belgium squad for Euro 2016 although he has stressed the need for first team football and claimed it would be "difficult" to stay at Liverpool if that could not be guaranteed.

"At 25 years old, I'm neither old nor young but it's important to play,"? Benteke said.

"I still have a contract at Liverpool and I'd like to stay there, if I remain in the coach's plans.

"If that's not the case, it will become difficult to stay. I'll think about if after the Euros."?

Benteke, however, has revealed he was "prepared" for a difficult season under Klopp even though the German was interested in his services while the striker was at Aston Villa.

"I was prepared for what I went through,"? Benteke added. "I knew that if I had mixed performances I would be criticised. That's what happened.

"When Klopp arrived, I saw that I wasn't in his plans. That was frustrating because I knew that during my first season at Aston Villa he wanted me.

"But we had several discussions together. I respect and I understand his decisions."?
