Chelsea Won't Need Nainggolan or Kante If Matic Regains Form

Published on: 09 June 2016

With Chelsea in the hunt for a huge midfield presence this summer, AS Roma's Radja Nainggolan and Leicester City's N'Golo Kante have both emerged as targets.

They are said to be in talks with the Premier League champions over a move for Kante, while bids have been made in attempts to pry Nainggolan from the Serie A club.

Both these midfielders would definitely increase Chelsea's chances of getting back at the top of the pile next season, yet they already have a player well capable in Nemanja Matic.

The Serbian is coming off an extremely poor season at Stamford Bridge, however, there aren't many Blues who could boast doing any better. Admittedly, Matic was one of the worst performers in a campaign where the club could only manage a 10th-place finish, and many expect him to move on during the break.

Several reports claim that the 27-year-old wants out, and favours a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho, who according to these reports wants the player at Manchester United as well. If the rumours are to be believed, and Mourinho does want Matic, then why shouldn't we?

Chelsea fans know exactly what he's capable of, but they've every right to feel that he needs replacing, off the backdrop of such a dreadful campaign. When in top form, though, there isn't a defensive midfielder in the Premier League who could match him - not even Kante, well not in certain regards.

If we are to compare Matic's performance over the 2014/15 season with Nainggolan's and Kante's, however shameful it may seem, the Serbian would come out on top in key areas.

Take pass completion for example, during Chelsea's title-winning season, Matic's was at 86 per cent. He also made 1957 successful passes.

Nainggolan's pass completion for this past season stands at 85 per cent with 1477 successful passes, while Kante recorded 82 percent with 1180 successful passes. Matic also won 101 tackles that season, and although it is bested by Kante's 125, Nainggolan only managed 52.

When it comes to interception, Kante obviously bosses that category, having made 156, dwarfing Matic's 73, but Nainggolan still lags behind with 46.

Matic is the obvious winner with aerial duels. The Serbian won 64 per cent of those. Nainggolan is next with 41 per cent, while Kante is just behind with 40 per cent.

Nainggolan only comes out on top in the key passes category, making 41, while Kante trails with 26 and Matic is next with 21.

Sadly, Matic could not replicate his performances this past season, and there's no telling whether or not he'll ever come to life at Chelsea. So it's understandable if the club - as well as incoming boss Antonio Conte - goes for a new player to play in Matic's position.

Chelsea are likely to undergo a massive rebuilding process, following their dreadful excuse for a title defence. And Matic - once hailed as the new Claude Makalele (or Michael Essien) - could be on his way out.
