Chelsea Target Kalidou Koulibaly Signs 5-Year Contract Extension With Napoli

"?Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly has extended his stay with the Naples-based club by signing a five-year contract to keep him with the Serie A giants until 2021, reports "?ESPN FC.

The central defender had been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea over the summer with Antonio Conte keen on signing him to bolster his defensive options.

However, Napoli President Aurelio de Laurentiis refused to budge from his £60m valuation of the player, thereby bringing a halt to discussions between the two sides.

"I am pleased to announce that Kalidou Koulibaly has renewed his contract with Napoli until the end of 2021," De Laurentiis said on Twitter.

It has been reported that the contract contains a €70m release clause, but the Napoli President refused to confirm whether or not this was the case.

Koulibaly joined Napoli from Belgian side Racing Genk in 2014 for £6m.

Last season, the Senegal international became one of the most acclaimed central defenders in Europe, making 42 appearances for the Serie A club last year.

The 25-year-old has made four appearances for the club this season and is likely to start against Genoa on Wednesday.

Napoli are currently top of the Serie A table having won three and drawn one of their opening games, while Genoa are currently in seventh position having won two and lost one.
