Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has the required personality and ability to return the club to its former glories, as reported by The Sun.
The former Chelsea boss put all the recent speculation of him going to Old Trafford to bed by signing a three-year deal last Friday.
United's performance under Louis van Gaal in the Premier League had added fuel to the speculation after a string of increasingly dull and uninspired displays from Van Gaal's men left fans feeling disillusioned.
But Lampard believes Mourinho's appointment will see an end to what has been on show in the last three years for United.
The 37-year-old shares a fantastic relationship with the Portuguese dating back to their time together at Chelsea where they won two Premier League titles together, as well as a host of other trophies.
Chelsea's all-time leading goalscorer said of Mourinho: "Jose will have a massive effect at United.
"He knows how to get a team winning by putting his own imprint on them.
"His personality reflects his teams and, looking from afar, Manchester United have needed that.
"They had a lot of quality in their squad but not much oomph.
"He has a base there but will bring in players and he will galvanise players.
The former Real Madrid boss has won three Premier League titles- all with Chelsea but his departures in 2007 and 2015 have both been shrouded in disappointment. But Lampard believes the 53-year-old has something special that will see him succeed at Old Trafford.
"Jose gives them the X Factor "? he did that at Chelsea. I know it didn't end perfectly there but I can see him succeeding at United.
"Next season will be as competitive as it has been for a while because a lot of teams have something to prove. But he is a top manager and a team like United need a top manager.
"It's brilliant for the Premier League that Jose is back.
"I had a great experience with him, especially during his first spell at Chelsea because he really helped me take my career onto the next level.
"I know what he brings to English football.
"I'm not a Manchester United fan but I don't think anyone can say they aren't licking their lips at the prospect of Mourinho, Guardiola, Klopp, Conte and Wenger all going up against each other next season."?
