Champions League Roundup: Atleti and Bayern Join Arsenal and PSG in Last-16 After Dramatic Night

Published on: 01 November 2016

A stunning Tuesday night of Champions League football saw goals and drama galore, with Manchester City avenging their 4-0 defeat to Barcelona a fortnight ago to go second in their group with a 3-1 win.

The victory takes Pep Guardiola's side three points ahead of third-placed Borussia Monchengladbach in Group C, and just two behind Lionel Messi and co with two games to spare.

"?
"?After a strong early penalty claim saw Raheem Sterling booked for diving, City's frustrations grew in the 21st minute when Messi side-footed home a Neymar pass to round off a speedy counter.

However, a Sergi Roberto mistake allowed the Sky Blues to equalise through Ilkay Gundogan just before the end of the first half.

A brilliant Kevin de Bruyne free kick put City ahead for the first time in the match, before Gundogan scored his fourth goal in a week from substitute Jesus Navas' drilled low cross to complete the scoring.
"?
While City were cruising to victory, "?Arsenal battled to complete a positive night for English sides in the competition, winning 3-2 away at Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad.

The Bulgarians surprised the Gunners by going 2-0 ahead in three minutes through goals from Jonathan Cafu and Claudio Keseru, taking advantage of poor set piece defending from the north Londoners.
"?
"?However Arsene Wenger's side came back strong - a neat finish from Granit Xhaka in the 20th minute and a Giroud header just before the break bringing them level going into the second half.

It took until the 87th minute to complete the turnaround, German playmaker Mesut Ozil chipping the Ludogorets keeper before cutting inside two defenders and slotting home to send Arsenal into the last 16 of the Champions League for another year under Wenger's leadership.

The Gunners and Paris Saint-Germain are now through to the next stage of the tournament after the French side won 2-1 away at Basel thanks to a last-minute stunner from Thomas Meunier. With Arsenal and PSG on 10 points apiece, the clash between the pair at the Emirates is liekly to decide who tops the group.

"?Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid left it late to snatch a 2-1 victory at home to Russian side FC Rostov, reaching the next round thanks largely to the efforts of Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman scored a delightful flick to open the scoring, but a Sardar Azmoun equaliser gave Atleti work to do - Griezmann flicking in off the bar in the 93rd minute.

"?
"?PSV lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich with Robert Lewandowski scoring twice to also send the Group D side through, while "?Benfica beat Dynamo Kiev 1-0. Celtic starlet Moussa Dembele rescued a 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach from the penalty spot, while Besiktas and Napoli also grabbed a goal apiece in the day's early kickoff.
