"?Three-time Champions League winner Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson approached him when the Scot was planning his retirement in 2013, and said he would have been interested in taking over from the legendary boss at Manchester United.
There was, however, one thing that prevented him from doing so and Fergie eventually turned to David Moyes to be his hand-picked Old Trafford successor instead.
Ferguson himself has also since revealed a desire to see Ancelotti join United, expressing regret that things didn't work out at the time.
Answering questions for FourFourTwo magazine, Ancelotti, who had previously won a Premier League and FA Cup double with Chelsea at the first time of asking, explained that United's approach was just a little too late and his immediate future had already been agreed with another club.
"After he retired in 2013 he spoke to me," the Italian said of the contact from Ferguson.
"But I had already given my word to go to Real Madrid. Manchester United were too late. But otherwise I would have been interested in going to Old Trafford."
Ancelotti was leaving Paris Saint-Germain after guiding the club to a first Ligue 1 title in 19 years and then was the man who handed Real the elusive Decima in the Champions League in his first season in Spain.
Meanwhile, with Moyes in charge, United slumped to seventh place in the Premier League. The new boss didn't even make it until the end of his first season, sacked just 10 months into a six-year contract to be replaced by Louis van Gaal a few weeks later.
