Borussia Dortmund Goalkeeper Roman Bürki Ruled Out for Eight Weeks With Broken Hand

"?Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Bürki has been ruled out of action for eight weeks after fracturing his metacarpal bone in his hand during Dortmund's 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday.

The 26-year-old gave a spirited display at the Westfalenstadion, making six strong saves to keep out Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and co.

But Burki couldn't escape unscathed, as he fractured a bone in his hand which will see him ruled out until the winter break.

"BVB goalkeeper Roman Burki broke his hand in the Bundesliga game against FC Bayern Munich (1:0) and will need an operation," Dortmund said on their official website. "The operation will take place in the Knappschaft Hospital in Brackel and will mean he will be out for up to eight weeks."

36-year-old Roman Weidenfeller will step in during Burki's absence, set to play in Dortmund's next seven games before the German winter break starts on December 20th.

Weidenfeller, who has been at the club since 2002, will see his contract expire at the end of the current campaign but Thomas Tuchel's side have discussed the possibility of extending the veteran goalkeeper's contract for another season.

The German keeper has made 442 appearances for Dortmund, making him the second on the most appearance list behind sporting director Michael Zorc.

The win against Bayern lifts BVB back into striking distance of their rivals, they are now in third, three points behind Bayern and six points behind Red Bull Leipzig.
