Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben in No Rush to Extend Contract

Published on: 12 June 2016

"?Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has said that he may extend his stay at the German champions, but that his primary aim is to regain full fitness.

The Dutchman has only one year remaining on his current terms, but told "?Kicker that he is looking ahead to pre-season training under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.

"The most important thing is to be fit for the start [of pre-season training] in the mid of July.

"I am doing fine and I guess I have good chances to make the first-team training," he said.

"I don't think about a new contract at the moment. I just want to be fit and stay healthy. This is my biggest wish right now."

Since signing for the club in 2009, Robben has gone on to become one of the most feared wide players in Europe - his pace, dribbling and directness meaning that he a defensive nightmare.

However, in recent seasons the 32-year-old has succumbed to a number of injuries that have affected his number of appearances - last season he played just 15 times in the Bundesliga.

His importance to the side is evident in the club's willingness to offer him a contract extension even when he has not been regularly fit, and his experience will be key in ensuring that the handover from Pep Guardiola to Ancelotti is as smooth as possible.

Robben's national side surprisingly did not qualify for this summer's Euro 2016 tournament in France - a number of disastrous performances and results under Guus Hiddink and then Danny Blind meant that they did not even reach the play-offs - even in the extended format.
