Bale Money: What Remains of Tottenham's Magnificent 7?

Published on: 30 August 2016

"?Back in the summer of 2013, Tottenham sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a record breaking transfer fee of £85.3m.

Throughout the summer, Tottenham embarked on a spending spree that saw the club record being broken three times. Chairmen Daniel Levy and technical director Franco Baldini strengthened Andre Villas-Boas' squad by adding seven new players in an attempt to replace Gareth Bale. They became known as 'The Magnificent Seven'.

Today, only two of the magnificent seven remain. The most recent to leave was Nacer Chadli, after he signed for West Brom in a "?club record £13m deal.

Below is an assessment of each of The Magnificent Seven and the impacts that they had at Spurs:

1. Paulinho

Paulinho was the first player to be signed in the Magnificent Seven. He signed for £17m from Corinthians and was dubbed to be the Brazilian Frank Lampard. He started off well at Spurs scoring eight goals in his first season including an excellent backheeled winner at Cardiff in the last minute.

However, after his first season, he failed to show anymore talent that the club had hoped for and he failed to impress Mauricio Pochettino. He was sold to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande for £9.8m.

2. Roberto Soldado

Roberto Soldado was bought for a club record £26m from Valencia. Like Paulinho, Soldado started off very well at the club scoring four goals in his first three games. However, his form had rapidly deteriorated and he ended the first season with only eleven goals to his name.

The Spaniard only managed to score 16 times in 76 games for Spurs which was shown by his lack of confidence on the pitch. In the end, he was sold to Villarreal for £12m.

3. Nacer Chadli

Belgian international Nacer Chadli was signed for £7m from FC Twente and was the cheapest of the Magnificent Seven. The attacking midfielder initially struggled during his first season at Spurs, but during his second season he lived up to the expectation. He is built well for the Premier League as he is tall, strong and has a powerful shot.

Last season he scored 11 goals and provided five assists in the Premier League. Only Harry Kane scored more goals than him. He proved to be a good signing for the club. The Belgian is the only member of the Magnificent Seven to have made Spurs a profit when sold.

4. Vlad Chiriches

Romania defender Vlad Chiriches was bought for £8.5m from Steaua Bucharest. The defender started off well at the club earning praise from Andre Villas-Boas.

Despite his initial impact at the club, he struggled with injury, a lack of form and inevitably found himself as a back-up option. The centre back made 43 appearances for the club, scoring two goals. He was later sold to Napoli for £4.5m last summer.

5. Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen was the last of the Magnificent Seven to be bought and is arguably the best of the seven to have played for Spurs. He was signed from Ajax in an £11.5m deal.

The Dane has made a great impact since making his debut against Norwich. He is still only 24 years old and the club hope he can only grow stronger as a player.

He is currently negotiating a new four year deal with the club which will see his wages more than double to £75,000 a week. This is definitely a reward for his impressive form over the past few seasons.

6. Erik Lamela

Erik Lamela is Tottenham's record signing after sealing a £30m move from Roma.

He initially struggled with the physicality and intensity of the Premier League. The Argentinian only managed one goal which came in the Europa League. He was ruled out for half of the season through injury.

After his initial struggles, he has now developed into a first class player who Spurs value highly. He has developed a lot under the careful eye of Mauricio Pochettino. He managed seven assists last season which was more than any other Spurs player and scored eleven goals.

Lamela is now a regular in the first team and is also rumoured to be negotiating a new contract with the club.

7. Etienne Capoue

Etienne Capoue joined Tottenham from Toulouse in an £8.6m deal and struggled to make an impact in North London.

The Frenchman's first season was hampered by multiple injuries and once Mauricio Pochettino took over as manager his chances of playing were slim as youngsters Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb were preferred.

Capoue only managed thirty-six appearances for the club in two seasons. He was subsequently sold to Watford last summer for £6m. He has made a bright start this season, already scoring two goals.
