Aston Villa's Prospective New Owner Makes Reassuring Promise to Fans

Published on: 25 May 2016

Dr Tony Xia has promised Aston Villa fans that he will be a hands-on owner should his takeover be successful.

The Recon Group CEO has already agreed a deal to buy the club for approximately £60m, and is just waiting for his bid to be formally approved by both the Premier League and the Championship.

"?Speaking to The Times - as quoted in "?HITC Sport -  the Chinese businessman said "I want to communicate with fans as much as I can, to win their hearts back to this great club"?.

After ten difficult years under the reserved stewardship of Randy Lerner, Villa fans will certainly be pleased to hear Xia's words.

Having been ever-present in the Premier League since its formation, Villa endured a dreadful season last time around, which ended in relegation to the second tier for the first time since 1986/87.

With Tim Sherwood then Remi Garde presiding over a Villains side that won just three league games all season, Xia's first job will be to hire a manager capable of leading them out of the Championship this season.

Roberto Di Matteo and Nigel Pearson - both with promotions on their CVs - have been mentioned as possible candidates, as has former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes.

Dr Xia became an Aston Villa fan during his five-month stay in Oxford during University. After studying landscape design at Harvard, and forming his first company at the age of 23, he then sold his second company, Teamax, for £430m, leading to his 2004 takeover of the Recon Group.

Now Xia looks set to take over at Villa Park and has already said that he intends to give the next manager a large transfer kitty. Additionally he's pledged to work as hard as possible to gain promotion back to the top flight.

He said, "I will work with the manager, I hope I can contribute something from my experience, it's not just being a fan, but the way I think, how to manage the team, or whatever. We have to figure out how to play in the Championship and win back [Premier League status] as soon as we can".

This will be music to Villa fans' ears as the first real green shoots of recovery emerge ahead of the long road back to the Premier League.
