Arsenal Set to Send Calum Chambers Out on Loan as Race for Central Defender Heats Up

Published on: 29 May 2016

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is preparing to send central defender Calum Chambers out on loan next season, in order to enhance the youngster's Premier League development, according to "?reports.

The 21-year-old struggled to pave his way into Arsenal's first-team as a starter this season, playing just 22 games in all competitions, a decrease from last season's total of 36.

His lack of first-team opportunities have also seen him fall out of Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2016, despite earning three caps in 2014 after his £16m move from Southampton to Arsenal.

Chambers was a part of England's under-21 side that won the Toulon Tournament on Sunday, he was also named as captain for a 1-0 win over Japan under-21's.

Wenger still has high hopes for Chambers, hoping he could grow into a role at either right-back or the centre of defence. However, the Frenchman feels a loan move would be beneficial, especially as plans to bring in an established central defender are in place.

The Gunners have entered the race to sign Villarreal defender "?Mateo Musacchio, who is also the subject of interest from Barcelona and AS Roma. "?Another defender on Arsenal's radar is Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, who could be available for over £30 million.
