Arsenal Ready to Offer Midfielder Jack Wilshere New Long-Term Contract

Published on: 19 May 2016

"?Arsenal are ready to reward midfielder Jack Wilshere with a new long-term contract if he performs well for England at Euro 2016, according to the "?Telegraph.

Wilshere has a poor recent injury record for Arsenal and only started one Premier League game last season because of it, though he was named in Roy Hodgson's provisional squad for the tournament in France earlier this week.

Arsenal want Wilshere - a homegrown player - to extend his stay at the club despite the fact he was only fit enough to start a game on the final day of the season against Aston Villa. He has two years remaining on his current deal, but is seen by Arsene Wenger and the club's supporters as one of their most important players.

Wilshere has played in only 66 Premier League games over the past five seasons, but the Gunners are ready to watch over their midfielder's performances at the competition and reward him with an extension on his current £90,000-a-week deal if he impresses.

The Premier League runners-up are looking to maintain a core of home-grown players to meet quotas for the domestic league and Champions League, and securing Wilshere's future has become more important recently as there are doubts over whether Kieran Gibbs and Theo Walcott will stay at the club.

Wilshere himself has been linked with Manchester City, though Arsenal are looking to tie his long-term future down and add a number of players around him to tilt at the title next season.

One of those potential arrivals is Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, who is set to travel to London on Friday to put the finishing touches on his move to the Emirates.

Journalist and close friend Artan Muhaxhiri confirmed the news on Facebook on Thursday, posting a photo and writing: "BREAKING NEWS: Just confirmed. Granit Xhaka is travelling to London to finalise an agreement with Arsenal FC! Congrats Granit "?#"?XhakaGooner"?."
