Arsenal Lead Race to Sign Manchester United Ace Michael Carrick on Free Transfer

Arsenal are leading the race to sign Michael Carrick from Manchester United on a free transfer, according to the "?Daily Express.

The 34-year-old midfielder who has made over 400 appearances for the club is available on a free with no word of a new contract from United on the horizon.

Last Tuesday's win over Bournemouth was expected to be his last for the club as he led his children around Old Trafford to say goodbye to the fans.

Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his midfield after the departure of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky.

Michael Carrick would fit the bill perfectly for the London side, despite his age he still made 24 appearances in the Premier League this season and can have a big role to play next season.

Arsenal are not the only club rumoured to be interested in securing his signature with West Ham, Everton, Newcastle, Stoke and even a move to the MLS being talked about for Carrick.

Arsenal do remain favourites to secure his signature although it remains to be seen if the former Spurs player would be willing to join their bitter rivals in North London.

Carrick played for Spurs for two years from 2004 to 2006 before Alex Ferguson prized him to Old Trafford for a fee of just under £20m.

The experienced midfielder could yet stay at Old Trafford with time remaining for Louis van Gaal to offer him a contract but with his age and the likelihood of Rooney playing a more deep role in the coming season he looks destined for the door.
