Arsenal Blocked Jack Wilshere's Move to Roma as Details of Bournemouth Deal Emerge

Published on: 01 September 2016

"?Bournemouth completed the signing of Jack Wilshere on a season-long loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day in one of the most surprising moves of the summer.

"?The Times report that the deal was struck as the Cherries agreed to a number of Arsenal's financial requests to facilitate the move, after the Gunners had previously blocked Wilshere's potential move to Italian side Roma.

"?According to BBC Radio 5 Live journalist David Ornstein, the England international completed a move to the south coast after Arsenal were unwilling to enter negotiations with the Serie A side.

Arsene Wenger's side rebuffed Roma's attempts to take Wilshere to the Stadio Olimpico after previous discussions between the two parties over Kostas Manolas left bad blood between the two sides.

The Gunners were attempting to bring Manolas to the Emirates in an effort to sure up their defence ahead of the Premier League season before the move fell through.

Ornstein revealed that the north London side rejected Roma's offer for Wilshere on this basis, despite the Italian side, who were aided by former Tottenham director of football, having agreed the terms with the player's representatives.

"It was a result of Arsenal not having the best opinion of Roma following negotiations over a possible move for Kostas Manolas earlier this summer."

With Roma removed from discussions, Ornstein revealed that this news prompted Eddie Howe's Bournemouth into the driving seat before going on to complete the move later on Wednesday evening, of which the terms of the deal have now been revealed.

Many were left scratching their head at why Wilshere elected to move to the Vitality Stadium amid interest from AC Milan, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica as well as Roma, however following the leaking of the details above, that has now become clear.

The Cherries will pay Wilshere's parent club £2m for the season-long loan whilst also agreeing to cover the Englishman's £80k-a-week wage packet for the duration of his time with them.

Arsenal had also received an offer from fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace, however the Eagles were only willing to pay a share of Wilshere's wages.
