Antonio Conte Reveals Chelsea Only Made David Luiz Approach in Final Hours of Deadline Day

Published on: 09 September 2016

"?Antonio Conte has revealed that Chelsea's deadline day swoop for David Luiz only came about in the final few hours of the final day of the summer transfer window.

"?The Blues boss was quoted by the Belfast Telegraph after his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash against Swansea City saying that a situation presented itself where the club discovered Luiz became available, after the club had missed out on other targets.

Luiz rejoined his former club for £34m after spending the past two seasons at Paris-Saint Germain - the club Chelsea had originally sold him to. And Conte, who only took over at Stamford Bridge in July, stated that Luiz's move only came about after PSG invited offers for the defender on August 31.

Conte said: "I told you that this transfer market was very difficult for us to reach our targets. But at the last minute, on the last day, there was this situation which was good for me and the club to improve the squad.

Welcome back, @DavidLuiz_4!

"For this reason, we bought David Luiz. We invested in David, and I'm very happy. We took a player with a great personality, good technique and who likes to play.

"I like to play football and I like defenders who like to play football. We know that David can improve in defensive situations, but it's good and I'm very happy he has come here.

"He's a good guy, a positive guy for the changing room. I'm very pleased for this."

However, the Italian went on to say that "?neither Luiz or fellow deadline day recruit Marcos Alonso - acquired from Fiorentina for £23m - would start against the Swans.

He added: "I think we have improved our squad. We needed two defenders in this transfer market. Two good players arrived who can improve our squad.

"Now it's important for them to work very hard, to go into our idea of football and to show me that they deserve to play.

"I think the new players need a bit of time to work with a new manager and a new philosophy. It's important to give them time.

"For this reason, I think the chance to play at the start is not high."?
