England legend turned BBC pundit Alan Shearer has admitted he is concerned about England's defence ahead of Euro 2016.
Roy Hodgson's side fly out to their base of Chantilly on Monday ahead of their opening game against Russia on Saturday June 11th.
Shearer, who holds the Premier League goalscoring record with 260 goals scored, claimed that the central defensive trio of Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and John Stones may struggle against Europe's top forwards.
Speaking to the "?Mirror, the ex-England forward said:
"Would I be scared of England's defenders?
"?"They wouldn't worry me if I was a forward, and I'm sure other teams have done their homework.
"At international level you should always know the player you're playing against, inside out, and I'm sure everyone will do their homework on England's centre halves.
"Defending in general has been a weakness for England at recent tournaments, whether it's big long balls down the middle that players have failed to attack or head clear, or Gary Cahill losing Mario Balotelli at the far post at the last World Cup.
"We've been caught out too many times and my worry is defensively in this tournament, definitely.
"When you look at centre halves in general, there's a dearth of them. We've got Cahill and Chris Smalling, but John Stones had a nightmare defensively for the last three or four months of the season."?
Shearer also claimed that Roy Hodgson must repay supporters for the disappointments faced in Brazil two year ago, where England crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage.
"Managers are defined by their success and certainly the last World Cup was bitterly disappointing. England need to have a good tournament this time, and I don't think Roy Hodgson would tell you any different.
"After Leicester won the title, we know anything is possible in football now, but with a bit of energy, excitement and fresh belief generated by young players, what is a good tournament this time - maybe the semi-finals?
"A great tournament would be getting to the final and winning it, but realistically I don't think we'll do that because my big worry is our defence, certainly straight down the middle anyway.
"I can see that being a big issue for us as it has been in the last couple of tournaments.
"People always criticise and say we're sick of building, we're sick of waiting, but hopefully we will at least see some improvement from the youngsters who have had a magnificent season with their clubs.
"We skated through our qualifying group with ease, as we should have done, because there were no real tests in there. But Roy knows you get judged in tournaments "? you don't have to tell him that."?
After playing Russia on Saturday, England will line up against neighbours Wales on 16th June before playing Slovakia four days later.
