Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Cheick Tiote who passed away on Monday after collapsing during a training session with his club Beijing Enterprises.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Cheick Tiote and to his close relatives and the African football family, we share your grief in this time of bereavement with deepest sympathies and condolences”, said the AFC President.
The 30-year-old Ivorian made his debut in Belgium’s RSC Anderlecht in 2005, before a short stint in Roda JC Kerkrade in the Netherlands. The midfielder made a name for himself in the Dutch Club FC Twente, procuring adoring fans along the way. Tiote’s most prominent displays of performance came with his spell at Newcastle United FC and assisting Ivory Coast to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
