Ibaraki: Kashima Antlers must hand Guangzhou Evergrande a first defeat in the 2017 AFC Champions League on Tuesday if they are to progress to a first quarter-final since 2008.
Paulinho’s solitary strike gave Guangzhou a 1-0 victory in the first-leg of the Round of 16 encounter to ensure the two-time winners will book their place in the last eight should they maintain their unbeaten run at Kashima Soccer Stadium.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side warmed up for the game with a 2-0 victory over Chongqing Dangdai on Friday to remain top of the Chinese Super League but can expect tough opposition in Japan, where Kashima have won all three of their home games on the continent.
